Bio Based 1,4-Butanediol (BDO)
DESCRIPTION
1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD) is a colorless, viscous liquid derived from butane containing alcohol groups at each end of its molecule. It is one of four stable isomers of butanediol. Bio based BDO is derived from renewable resources through an advanced bio-fermentation process reducing the footprint compared to conventional, fossil fuel based BDO.

MAJOR APPLICATIONS
As a chemical intermediate, BDO can be used in the field of THF, PBT and PU. THF is the primary derivative of 1,4-butanediol, accounting for over half of consumption, with the majority of THF used for PTMEG production. Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resins used in the production of engineering plastics is the next-largest market, at about 22% of global consumption. In PU applications, 1,4-butanediol is widely used as a chain extender at room temperature in MDI and aliphatic diisocyanate systems.
